Introduction to Graphic Design

The role of a graphic designer in industry is to translate a conceptual idea into a design that serves a function: delivering to the end-users a final product that brings a positive marketing result and engagement with their clients. Designers are course or degree qualified and are equipped to provide solutions to a range of creative problems. Often, these manifest as advertising, marketing, web design and other aesthetic forms.

Squiggle Studio sees the importance of conceptual thinking in design. When beginning a design process, a designer begins investigating and researching the initial project brief. They may collaborate with other designers or marketing experts. They then combine their conceptual thinking with their research to produce a creative, graphic solution.

Squiggle Studio introduces graphic design to primary school-aged students by teaching kids to develop their own conceptual and creative problem-solving skills. We explore how to approach a creative problem from a provided ’Design Brief’. Students then learn how to translate their concepts and ideas into a finished design piece. An example of a Design Brief might be a children’s book cover, mug, poster, t-shirt, packaging or the creation of a 3D paper structure.

“My 10-year-old son, Josiah joined the art lessons at Squiggle Studio in 2017 and he was extremely happy with the experience. He was learning about modern artists, creativity and has the space to interrupt his own self-expression through art. His art teacher, Phyllis was great and very encouraging. Highly recommended.”
