Landscape and Wilderness in South Island, NZ

Landscape drawing at Hokitika Gorge – Phyllis

Hokitika Gorge was stunning. I was amazed by how blue the water was – a beautiful turquoise blue. It was a place of photographic opportunity! As I was photographing, I appreciated the moment – the nature and the peaceful environment. It emanated a sense of calmness and tranquillity. I could hear the sounds of the wind and native birds twitting. I took my sketch pad and oil pastels out and started sketching.

Overwhelmed by the stunning landscape, wilderness and coastal sceneries of the South Island, New Zealand.

The following week, after I came back from New Zealand’s south island, I showed my sketches and photos to my Grade 5 Squiggle Studio students. They were amazed and inspired by the pictures. The students learned how to sketch landscapes with more purpose. We used photographs as our reference. After the students selected the image they liked to work with, I guided them in observing the details: water reflection, colours, shades, the emotions and here’s what they created.
