My Story.
I lived in Hong Kong as a young child. It was there that my mother noticed that I was amazingly engaged in, spent many hours, drawing pictures, cartoons, creating games and craft-making. During school holiday periods, my mother sent me to art classes as a holiday activity. I was seven-years-old when I had my first of these classes.
Since that first class, my mother provided me with more opportunities to develop my talent. I began to develop an intense love for drawing and creating things.
Years later, and much older, I migrated with my family to Melbourne in 1986. Throughout my schooling in Melbourne, I was guided and supported by my art teachers. They inspired me even further and developed my talent in art, architecture, design and photography.
In 1998, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Swinburne University. Six months prior to graduation, I was offered a graphic design position by one of my lecturers who had his own design company.
I worked for ten years as a graphic designer until I gave birth to my first of two children. As fortuitous as life often is, in July 2016, a friend of mine was searching for an art class for her son to learn drawing. With great enthusiasm, I asked my friend to give me an opportunity to teach her son drawing. It was a success!
From that day on, I started Squiggle Studio. I now educate many children in art, drawing techniques and graphic design. Squiggle Studio also runs art and design workshops for kids during the school holidays – just like I had all those years ago!
PHILOSOPHY
Phyllis believes that art teachers can play an important role to help children to build self-confidence, their creativity and to discover their artistic talents. In her own life, Phyllis had art teachers in high school and design lecturers at University who saw her talents and potential. They were crucial actors in helping her to progress, develop and exceed beyond her ability to achieve higher creative excellence. These teachers encouraged Phyllis to submit some of her best artwork in competitions, and she has won many awards for her excellence in conceptual design and innovation.
At Squiggle Studio, we believe that having passionate and supportive teachers can make a difference to the way a child expresses themselves.
We are pleased to receive many compliments from parents and children who attend our program. Children are not just learning basic drawing skills, but they are provided with an opportunity to be exposed to graphic design techniques at a young age – something that is crucial for establishing their creative thinking into adulthood.
In Phyllis’ classes, children are given creative freedom so that they may express their ideas and thoughts beyond physical boundaries. Phyllis believes every child is unique. Every child is an artist when they are given an environment to create, experiment, inspire and explore innovatively.
